3 House Hunting Red Flags

If you’ve paid attention to the housing market lately, you know that houses are selling faster than most potential buyers can keep up with. While that’s good news for sellers, it can be pretty frustrating to buyers who want to take their time house hunting. At ProTech Home and Property Inspections, Phil and the entire team wants to encourage you to always do your research and due diligence before buying a home by getting a home inspection from a qualified professional. Additionally, here’s a quick list of major red flags to avoid while house hunting, so you can quickly know if a property is worth your time.

House Hunting Red Flags to Avoid

1. Other Properties for Sale

As you start to consider a house for sale, the first thing you should do is check out the neighborhood. If there are several other properties for sale nearby, it could mean that the neighborhood is becoming undesirable or even unsafe. You need to ask yourself why so many other people no longer want to live in that neighborhood before you put in an offer. If you go ahead with the showing and love the home, make sure to visit it at different times during the day to get a true feel of the neighborhood, and consider if you feel truly safe and comfortable.

2. Smelly House

The next major red flag we’d like to point out is the smell of the house. It may seem like a small issue now, but the smell of the house is actually a good indicator of the overall condition. Musty smells point to water leaks or mold, and some animal smells may be difficult or even impossible to get rid of should you buy the property. Also, beware of too much good smell as they might be trying to hide something.

3. Old or Damaged Windows

Finally, make sure to check out the windows before you fall in love with a property. As you walk through the house, pull back the curtains and look for lopsided frames, windows that are sticky and hard to open, or freshly-installed windows to ensure they are installed correctly.

If you’ve found a house without any of these red flags, it’s still very important to schedule a professional home inspection. Contact Phil and the team at ProTech Home and Property Inspections in Atlanta, Georgia today at (470) 592-8828. We look forward to serving you.
