What is Radon Testing?

Home InspectionIn addition to our premier home inspection services, our team at ProTech Home & Property Inspections, Inc. offers a number of specialized services—including radon testing. However, what we’ve found as we talk with home buyers and owners is that while most people understand the value of a home inspection, they don’t realize that radon testing is also an important inspection to consider. In fact, here are a few common questions we get about radon inspections.

What is radon?

Here’s what we know about radon: This odorless, tasteless gas is naturally occurring and radioactive; it can be found in both residential and commercial properties alike. The biggest concern about radon is its potential impact on your health. Radon has been linked by the Environmental Protection Agency as being the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Why get radon testing?

The main reason Phil, Joyce, and the entire ProTech team recommends radon testing is to protect your health. Because you don’t know whether radon is present without specialized equipment, you don’t know whether the house you’re buying is a radon hotbed. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to radon and its effects.

What happens during a radon inspection?

When you have scheduled radon testing, our experts come to the property and set up a radon detector. This equipment takes regular readings of the air over the course of a couple days. We then take these readings to determine an average radon level in the home, which will help us determine whether it’s within normal ranges. Most experts agree that an average radon reading of 4 pCi/L or over is considered dangerous and remediation is necessary.
